Sometimes Going Bats Works
That November 2006 agreement between Frankfurt-Hahn
Airport(FFHG) and the German environmental organization, Bund für
Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) of Rhineland-Palatinate allows
putting an already completed runway extension into operation while preserving
important wild habitat on part of the busy airport.
Under the agreement, encroachment on nature
is minimalized by removing trees of a critical height and thinning the
undergrowth, followed by reforestation.
Specifiically trees that are also nurseries
for barbastels and Bechstein's bats are being retained.
Working together all around includes supervision
of all activities on the project by the BUND, the Forestry Commission,
University of Mainz and FFHG. |
