Bravo Bisignani

Finally an organization that people pay attention to came out and said what travelers and air cargo people have known for a long time, that service and the day-to-day experience at Heathrow and other U.K. airports owned by BAA Ltd. needs improvement.
“Embarrassingly low service levels,'' said IATA Director General Giovanni Bisignani of The International Air Transport Association in a statement.
“Unique screening policies inconvenience passengers with no improvement in security.
“The only beneficiary is the airport operator —BAA—that continues to deliver embarrassingly low service levels by failing to invest in appropriate equipment and staff to meet demand.
    “This must stop.”
Grupo Ferrovial SA bought BAA which owns seven airports including Heathrow that moves 63 percent of UK traffic last year for $20 billion.
Separately IATA said that air cargo demand for the first six months of 2007 grew 2.7%, well below the 4.6% growth recorded for the full-year in 2006.
While year-to-date demand growth is weaker than forecast, June year-on-year demand for freight grew 4.9%.
This is the second consecutive month of strengthening demand for freight, following the 5.0% growth recorded in May, and could be indicating a return to historical growth levels in the 5-6% range.

IATA Warsaw Best Bets

Trade show attendees looking for some bang for the buck cannot do better than the extensive menu of events and industry gatherings put up by The International Air Transport Association and its energetic, inventive Global Head of Cargo, Akeks Popovich.
As 2008 approaches IATA Cargo once again is fresh while everybody else is tired.
In a world of air cargo trade shows that promise sizzle but will deliver the usual suspects discussing a menu of bland sameness, the action of IATA Cargo to seek solutions will be recalled as among the most important initiatives in air cargo history.
Come September 18-19 in Warsaw, Poland IATA Cargo will explore Emerging Markets in Eastern Europe as no other organization big or small has attempted.
The event will be in a hotel with panel meetings and elbow rubbing and maybe you don’t walk away with a bag of orders, but chalk this one up to education and understanding being a big part of the currency of the future.
Maybe the glass half full and the label “research worthwhile” can be applied here.
Media attention is now being paid to Aleks Popovich’s initiative that went mostly overlooked this year called World Cargo Symposium being held next March in Rome, Italy.
When the WCS was held earlier in 2007 in Mexico, FlyingTypers was amazed to not only be almost alone as media covering the event, but even more importantly we were taken aback at just how beneficial this WCS was for a host of companies from all disciplines of the transportation chain.
     About WCS Mexico, Aleks said:
“The first IATA World Cargo Symposium was designed for information, interactivity, and effective industry networking.
“Focus on Simplicity brought together 11 air cargo industry governing bodies and featured 10 highly topical air cargo tracks.
“250 air cargo supply-chain decision makers and 600 cargo professionals from around the world participated in our week-long global event included.
“Attendees conducted business on-site with key industry players while discovering (and influencing) the latest air cargo industry developments.
“The IATA World Cargo Symposium is the only such event to re-invest profits into Air Cargo's Simplifying the Business program.”
So take a tip—before you go spending your hard earned money for one of those air cargo shows or other events, all about too much money for everything and spotty delivery of traffic.
FlyingTypers recommends a closer look at the upcoming 2007-08 menu of events put up by IATA Cargo including the kick-off Fall 2007 Emerging Markets this September 18-19 in Warsaw and of course The World Cargo Symposium March 6-8 in Rome, Italy in 2008.
And don’t forget CNS Partnership, a USA event like no other that just keeps getting better.
CNS is taking place next May 4-6 in Palm Beach, Florida.
