Lufthansa Strike Friday

ANA and LH Tails
Just as the MD-11 painted WOW seems to have exited the skies forever, here comes word of a new air cargo alliance between Lufthansa and a Japanese carrier.
Armed with antitrust immunity for a Japan-Europe joint venture, ANA and Lufthansa Cargo said they would launch a strategic air cargo joint venture (in addition to passenger) on routes between Japan and Europe. It will be the first global cargo joint venture of its kind.
“ANA and Lufthansa Cargo can jointly manage activities covered by the joint venture, including network planning, pricing, sales, and handling, and will introduce the joint approach on shipments originating from Japan to Europe in winter 2014/2015 and for shipments from Europe to Japan mid-2015,” Lufthansa said.

Where Green Cargo Takes Hold

Energy efficiency and cost savings are topics that pique the interest of air cargo terminal operators worldwide, as modern cargo-handling equipment and storage systems—however efficient—are still dependent on utilizing conventional electricity-generating sources.
Dnata-operated air cargo terminals in Dubai have adopted energy and environmental policies that attempt to address environmental impact of increasing operational activities since the early 90s.
The company has formulated various measures to reduce the consumption of energy and other resources, including paper usage, in addition to supporting green initiatives.

LED Lights FreightGate

Dnata’s most recent push for a green environment has been the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lights in its FreightGate 3 facility at the Dubai Airport Free Zone in 2013.
New outdoor signage at the facility will also see the old lighting replaced with LEDs by 2014-2015.
This initiative was taken onboard by the management after a detailed investigation and analysis conducted by its Cargo Planning division, with the support of employees who volunteered (known as Quality Teams) to spend extra hours collecting necessary data.
Their recommendations indicated LED-lamp installation at FreightGate 3 would reduce the energy consumption from 444,148 kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 174,575 kWh, which translated into a cost saving of AED 91,090 per annum.

Dnata Warehouse

Carbon Neutral Warehouse

Dnata Freightgate 5     In 2010, Dnata-operated FreightGate 5 cargo terminal warehouses became models for sustainability across Dubai, in a project piloted by the Dubai Government's Department of Economic Development.
The launch of this carbon-neutral warehouse, where automated equipment can operate under a far more conservative lighting apparatus, has generated a great deal interest.
The initiative was part of an agreement signed between the DED and DHL to develop logistics innovation initiatives that drive efficiencies within the logistics sector through better policy management.
The program served as a template for green warehousing across the region which, according to the estimates, said it could save 1.9 million tons of carbon dioxide annually by 2020, equivalent to the current annual carbon footprint of some 60,000 UAE residents.

Green Thinking Since 1990s

Dnata Cargo’s environmental drive started during the early 90s, which earned the division the accreditation for the International Standard for Environmental Management System (ISO14001) in 2000.
The successful attainment of the OHSAS standard also makes Dnata the first company in the region to hold multiple quality certifications, which integrates all quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems. Dnata Cargo is also certified with ISO 9001-2000 for quality management systems.

Putting Energy At Work Planning

Energy-saving measures at Dnata are divided into those relating to hardware, such as equipment upgrades and their timely maintenance, including the installation of efficient terminal and warehouse operational systems (DACS plus, CAMSYS, and HHTS etc.) which reduce paper usage, and those relating to software such as operational improvements like enhanced management methodologies and standards.

Hey Friend, Use It Again

With the implementation of an effective plan for recycling used papers, Dnata Cargo joins hands with the regional and worldwide campaigns on saving ever-diminishing invaluable resources. As part of the various measures taken, used papers are collected on a regular basis. The employees are constantly made aware of the importance of having to deposit used materials in a responsible manner.
To this end, recycling bins are positioned in each area of the cargo operations.

Awareness Begins At Home

In view of promoting Dnata Cargo's environmental policy, the company has created programs for employees to develop a consciousness in the conservation of water, fuel, and energy. Posters and banners depicting the varied environmental topics—aimed at educating employees and encouraging them to use as little resources as possible—are visible throughout the facilities.
The awareness building also involves encouraging employees to take part in conservation workshops, campaigns, and cleanup drives initiated by both the UAE government and environmental organizations.
Dnata also reports on its environmental performance by contributing to the annual Emirates Group Environmental Report, which is publicly available online.

Bardarbunga The Friendly Volcano

Although many are keeping a weather eye out for trouble, the Iceland volcano, named Bardarbunga, recently in the news is not causing disruption to flights as it is producing smoke, rather than ash.
So unlike the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, that caused widespread upheaval in the airline business, Bardarbunga to some has become a tourist attraction. Yesterday, an Icelandair pilot flew his airplane on a mini sightseeing tour around the volcano.

Inda Agents CASS Plea Dumped

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) rejected an injunction by the Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI) on the Cargo Account Settlement System (CASS), and we’re trying to glean what the message might be. It’s a fact of life in September 2014 that for most subcontinent airlines & agents, the order—whether implemented or rejected—carries little weight, as most have not adopted CASS in the first place.
For the record, CCI, in its order dated August 26, noted that ACAAI “has not established factors such as balance of convenience and irreparable loss," adding that CASS India “is still in its pilot project and has not been made mandatory for the airlines.”
This is the second setback for ACAAI as the India Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT) rejected an appeal made by the group on the same grounds earlier this year.
However, Business Insider India reports ACAAI is not backing down, so widespread adoption of the IATA CASS scheme—at least in its present form—remains win or lose, and that is still up in the air.
"The proposed system,” a source told BII,” does not address our concerns, such as delayed payments or erroneous payments.
“CASS system requires us to make full payment to the airline even if it's an erroneous billing.
“We have to take up the corrections later.
“This leads to delay in operations and could prove disastrous for us.”

Ma Asia First At QR Cargo

Matthew Ma   “It is opportune to join Qatar Airways Cargo and share the vision held at the carrier of achieving position among the top five cargo airlines.
“I am excited to start a new challenge and look forward to further developing their growing business,” said Matthew Ma, who assumed command as QR Cargo Vice President Cargo Asia on September 1.
With more than 45 years of experience, including a lifetime at Cargolux-—41 years— Uli Ogiermann, Chief Officer Cargo, is jubilant, saying:
“Matthew has an excellent track record in the airfreight industry and we are glad to find someone of his caliber to join our team.”
   About Qatar Airways Cargo:
Qatar Airways Cargo serves more than 40 exclusive freighter destinations via three Airbus A330F and six Boeing 777 Freighters.
Qatar Airways placed a firm order for five new Airbus A330-200 Freighter aircraft. Also included in the order were eight additional A330-200F options, for a total of 13 aircraft. At the recent Farnborough Show, Qatar Airways announced its intent to order four 777 Freighters, with options for four more.

Dubai Business Park Promo

Paolo Serra     Al Maktoum International Airport, (Dubai World Central [DWC]) that large bit of real estate that is also home to Emirates SkyCargo freighters, recently sent Paolo Serra, VP, DWC Business Park to Delhi as part of a “Showcase Dubai” initiative.
With his focus on the growing small and medium enterprises (SME) sector in India, Serra said, “Al Maktoum International Airport had been planned as the world's largest passenger and cargo hub, spanning over 220 square km (85 sq. miles).
“Upon completion, the airport will have an annual cargo capacity of 12 million tons and a passenger capacity of up to 160 million people per year, making it one of the busiest airports in the world.”
Other DWC revelations from Serra included that the location will be the “gateway to the world's global business, the first truly integrated and self-sustained economic zone and logistics platform supporting a wide range of transport modes, logistics, and value-added services, including manufacturing and assembly, in a single Free Economic Zone.”
“DWC is about 30 minute from Dubai.
“Its other big attraction is that Dubai will host the upcoming World Expo 2020.
“Indian people and businesses have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Dubai, so much so that over 50 percent of the population of Dubai is of expatriate Indian community.
“India emerges as the top trading partner of Dubai in 2013 with a trade volume of $37 billion, representing a 10 percent share of the total foreign trade of the emirate.
“DWC’s Business Park boasts of swift business facilitation, where companies can set up offices within 10 days, which is a great advantage for businesses in India who want to quickly set up their businesses at the gateway of global business environment.
“As the Free Economic Zone, DWC offers 100 percent foreign ownership and zero tax policy, along with a variety of business licenses, ” Serra declared.

Linda DreffeinQuote 1Linda Is Top Notch— May 6, 2014

FlyingTypers' spoke to Linda Dreffein, Managing Director Cargo Sales at American Airlines Cargo as part of an attempt to shine a light on the people who propel our business.
Linda is thoroughly professional and top notch, all the way.
“Together, we are mapping out our plans to create one really great team with a well-executed process and implementation toward single air waybill later this year.
“While our core business remains consolidation traffic and perishables, we’re seeing significant growth in pharmaceutical business as a result of the development of our temperature control program—ExpediteTC.
“Along with 2 to 8°C traffic, we’ve also attracted large volumes of ambient temperature commodities including specialty tapes, computer parts and artwork.”
“Rather than LD3s and LD8s, we’ve been more creative selling narrow body-compatible shipments and talking with our customers about alternative packaging.
“The eventual combination of the two airlines will open many new markets for our customers, and together, we will be able to offer them even more options.
“In 2014, we’ve expanded our sell beyond our metal.
“We’re more creative talking to our customers, not only about point-to-point consolidation traffic, but temperature control business, interline and new destinations as well as those we can reach by road feeder service.
“On our U.S. domestic flights, we’re letting our customers know we’re reopening cargo facilities and will continue to do so through the remainder of the year.
“I’ve never been bored in this business, and I’ve never looked back.
     “Change is constant.
     “I love what I do.
“More and more women are finding air cargo a challenging and rewarding industry. At American we have women in sales, operations, in headquarters staff positions in management as well as administrative positions.
“In our organization it’s not about male or female – it’s the best person for the job – and I see that all over American.”

Brandon Fried and Tony Tyler At CNSQuotable 2June 16, 2014

At the CNS Partnership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, on May 2-4, President of the      Airforwarders Association Brandon Fried and Secretary General of IATA Tony Tyler held what we imagined might be a throw-down morning session between forwarder and airline.
After all, cutting to the chase in that relationship is why CNS Partnership went into business 27 years ago.
But what the duo actually delivered was among the dreariest presentations of any trade show in recent memory.
There was nothing in the session we can recall, let alone report as newsworthy.
Too much time spent with no payoff at trade show prices.
Maybe the session was held because, by comparison, it gave tremendous dignity to the people who sat quietly in their seats and had to listen to it.
     But, I don’t know.
