On The Ground In Haiti
Let’s face it. While people are suffering in Haiti 700 miles off the coast of USA it is hard to not think of what can be done to help.
But along with a genuine outpouring of assistance with a U.S telethon that raised about USD$60 million and another up in Canada adding another 10—plus very generous efforts and maybe even more money from Europe and the Middle East as well as nearly everywhere else, there are some efforts to help that raise question.

United Cargo From Heartland To Haiti
United Airlines continued its support of the earthquake relief effort in Haiti with flights on January 20 and 21 between Chicago O’Hare and Port-au-Prince.
The first flight, a B757, transported 15,000 pounds of water donated by Walgreens, 384 sleeping tents from Feed the Children and communications equipment

Lufthansa Cargo Usual Lift Unusual
As Lufthansa Cargo moved 77 tons to SDQ to help in Haiti—CEO Carsten Spohr looked out a window at the FRA ramp last week and said: "When the driving snow brings German infrastructure to the limits of its possibilities we can only imagine the state of things in Haiti after the catastrophic earthquake.

Air PIH Cargo Takes Off
Justin Miranda is examining a white board covered in notes about the model, cargo load, and location of dozens of planes.
Generous donors have made them available to PIH in order to shuttle desperately needed medical staff and supplies to Haiti, and they now need to be matched with teams of volunteers and cargo ready for shipment.

Air India Back In The Jackpot
Air India’s troubles never seem to end. The latest is a blast from a 31-member Parliamentary panel. Headed by a soft-spoken Communist Party of India (Marxist) Member of Parliament Sitaram Yechury, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture has criticized the decision of the government to merge Air India and Indian Airlines.

Drinking LaGuardia
I’m sitting at a bar in the basement of the Central Terminal Building (CTB) at LaGuardia Airport, in a space that used to be home to Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank, reminiscing on a time that I had thought would never go away.
George “Tim” Peirce was once manager of the airport, Ronnie Rapaciullo was bank manager, and Danny Radovan was upstairs at a restaurant called “The Terrace”.

Security Top Priority At Lufthansa
How well is the air freight industry prepared to meet the requirements of Washington’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for a 100% screening of shipments flying on passenger aircraft beginning next August?
“We are,” claim Lufthansa Cargo’s security experts in photo Harald Zielinski (left) and Jim (James) LoBello (right) simultaneously. All seventeen U.S. airports the airline is landing at are equipped with self-owned trace detection devices or x-ray screening machines. The choice between explosive ‘sniffers’ or x-ray machines is optional and is contingent on a number of factors.

Lufthansa Cargo Lifts Hope For Haiti
They held a fundraiser last Friday that played all over America on nearly every television station and elsewhere around the world to raise funds for Haiti with people like George Clooney and Julia Roberts answering the phones. The telethon raised USD$58 million
While that show was playing, there also was a similar effort up in Canada that included the PM pleading to his countrymen for help while matching funds donated.

U.S. Transportation Outlook 2010
Is it reasonable to expect a move towards stability for the U.S. transportation sector?
Perhaps even a rebound in performance and credit quality?
During 2008 and the first half of 2009, the major performance indicators of the U.S. transportation system (vehicle miles traveled (VMT), twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), and enplanements) were down significantly.
Investors and analysts have had a negative view of the throughput and financial performance of toll facilities, seaports and airports.

Clipper Young America Debuted B747
Frankfurt-based general sales and service agent Cismat GmbH (pronounced Chismat) has begun 2010 with a big bang by announcing the opening of new offices at eleven Indian airports.
It is the first international expansion for the early 2009-founded German cargo sales agent.

Haiti Relief Tough Enough
Port-au-Prince Airport, that was miniscule when its world turned upside down one week ago Tuesday, right now has been overwhelmed by response to the earthquake disaster.
"The airport in Port-au-Prince does not have the capacity to handle so many aircraft," Juan Carlos Porcella, the head of the civil aviation authority in neighboring Dominican Republic told reporters.

Traxon & Cargonaut Team Up
Germany-based communication provider Traxon Europe GmbH and Holland’s Cargonaut B.V. are collaborating by mutually offering the global air cargo industry a product named eCargo Pouch.
According to its name the message management system is a web-based platform for electronic documentation of shipments and rapid exchange of information along the entire supply chain, from

Short Shrink Boosts Thai Rebound
At the start of 2009, the prospects were somewhat bleak for the economy of Thailand, already deep in recession, but 12 months later the country is well on its way to recovery, though there are still a snags that could undermine growth.
Though Thailand's economy contracted by 2.8% year-on-year in the third quarter, the shrinkage was far less than the 7.1% in the first three months of 2009 or the 4.9% in the second quarter.

Cismat Goes India
Frankfurt-based general sales and service agent Cismat GmbH (pronounced Chismat) has begun 2010 with a big bang by announcing the opening of new offices at eleven Indian airports.
It is the first international expansion for the early 2009-founded German cargo sales agent.

Kari Fights Back
A friend of ours is taking it tough this week but he is a tough guy who will not be overcome and has vowed to fight back.
Kari Tikkanen, who was part of the Finland team and later the fortunes of Finnair Cargo USA during its greatest growth years as top executive here during the late 1980’s and most of the 1990’s had a quadruple bypass heart operation Wednesday.

Air Cargo Timeline To Haiti
As the horror in Haiti continues to unfold, including a mighty 6.1 shock that rocked the tiny island nation early Wednesday morning, air cargo companies around the world have joined in the effort to fly in relief.
While the media on the ground in Haiti continues to report the story from their perspective, another avenue of communication in air cargo is first person on the scene descriptions that Air Cargo News FlyingTypers is receiving from around the world depicting relief efforts from preparation to delivery.

Reto To The Top At LH Charter
Reto Rudolf Hunziker, who had gone global in reputation as marketing team leader at the Sino-German all-cargo JV Jade Cargo based in Shenzhen, has moved to his new post as managing director at Lufthansa Charter Agency, succeeding Christian Fink who was upped and now has moved out of day-to-day air cargo to an entirely new job at Lufthansa.
Before he departed, Christian sat together with Reto for an exclusive Air Cargo News FlyingTypers up close and

What Will Happen In 2010—Part Deux
Once again the best and brightest in air cargo jump into the breach, go out on a limb and generally share without reservation (or compensation) a bird's eye view of the new year and decade just begun, up front and personal and unvarnished.
Everybody wants to know what to expect and so this series continues offering you an opportunity to contribute your thoughts around a simple question:
“What Will Happen in 2010? Write to me geoffrey@aircargonews.com and you will be included.

Air Cargo Battles Horror In Haiti
“The agony of the entire world is etched on the faces of people down on the ground as the nightmare of the Haiti disaster unfolds,” said New York Daily News as editorial writers everywhere searched for ever more graphic word pictures to describe an indescribable horror in Haiti 2010.
Right now from every corner of the globe relief efforts are pointed at the stricken island nation that took a hit described by one observer as “the worst natural disaster to beset a nation in the western hemisphere in hundreds of years.”

Dear Geoffrey,

Thank you so much for your kind words, and forgive me for my long-delayed response.
As you can imagine, we are flat out here in the Boston office, working to provide our colleagues on the ground in Haiti with the critical supplies and medical personnel they need to address this disaster, both to our sites and at the field hospitals where we are working in Port au Prince
Can Turkey Grow Trade & Cargo?
Although the Turkish economy slid into recession, in 2009 in part due to the steep decline in overseas trade and a falling off in domestic demand, there was no financial collapse as occurred during the downturn of 2001, with the banking sector not only surviving but also prospering and the stock market riding a wave of growing activity.
That said, Turkey remains in negative territory and unlike some of Europe's big
economies, such as Germany and France, it may take a bit longer to move out of recession, with many experts predicting a return to growth in the second half of the year.
Oh My Oman Air Rises
Following a tough economic year for the region, welcome news came from the aviation industry, which witnessed flag-carrier Oman Air closing 2009 with successful growth figures. The airline reported a 17% increase in passenger numbers and a 67% increase in revenue for its cargo division, demonstrating its growth strategy has retained resilience despite a poor year globally for the sector.
2010 In A Fortune Cookie
If all else fails as we look ahead in 2010— can we still rely on that most trusted of sources to at least roll the dice on what may lie ahead?
A new movie asks that very question.
“The Killing of a Fortune Cookie”, by Los Angeles-based director Derek Shimoda is a 75 minute light hearted look at this most famous and apparently misunderstood confection.

Air Cargo Help Rushes To Haiti
(Update Wednesday January 13, 2100 hrs. NYC)—The Port au Prince International Airport in Haiti’s capital is operational as aid starts arriving, although makeshift ATC is ramping up as the control tower is out.
The main terminal took some damage and is also off limits as this is written.
U.S. State Department, meanwhile, has set up a number for U.S. citizens seeking information about family members in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747.

Lux Ogiermann Deluxe
Ulrich Ogiermann who has been CEO at Cargolux for the past eight years and now also is giving something back serving as Chairman of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA), came out of the passenger business.
But unlike some others Mr. Ogiermann switched over to air cargo, first at Lufthansa where he found an industry fairly well populated with smart, well educated people, so Uli has been moving up the industry corporate ladder ever since.
Blackberry in hand, this executive seems at this point a freight man for life.

What Will Happen In 2010
Here we go around again as a new year and decade premier and everyone is planning and maybe wondering, both at the same time.
We have seen the years 2000 until 2010 described as the “decade from hell” and worse, in many year ending/first of the year reports.
But for us in air cargo what has happened is history and what will take place moving ahead is belly up to the bar right now.
January 10: DHL launched less than container load (LCL) weeklies from Hong Kong to Buenos Aires & Valparaiso via Danner Lines.

Incheon Appointment With Greatness
Incheon is about to emerge as a mega air freight hub as the South Korean gateway paves its way to becoming one of the world’s leading cargo airports.
To land in an air cargo leadership role, the local authorities are pursuing a dual strategy consisting of a major enlargement of their facility as well as attracting more air freight and traffic from the neighboring markets of China and Japan.

Frankfurt Animal Lounge the state-of-the-art animal center at Frankfurt Airport is just plus a year old and it continues to draw raves.

Celebrating The Great Joe Berg

We made a mistake, a big one, in our last issue when Joe Berg somehow ended up in an “In Memoriam” salute wrap up report of first decade of the 21st century.
So we are happy to report that Joe Berg, a dreamer and a doer who graced the air cargo industry with his intelligence and charm, diligence and hard work for half a century, and by any measure can be counted as part of that small cadre of true pioneers of the form of air freight forwarding, in 2010 is alive and well and living in Stamford, Connecticut.

Air Cargo Decade 2000-2010
As the new decade begins thoughts drift back to the first ten years of the new century.
Rather than just look at some of our back issues what we have gathered here are some thoughts strictly from memory almost without any prompting.
Sure, we may have missed some things important to you dear reader but that’s where an email to Geoffrey@aircargonews.com can help.
Send us your list or maybe just some events that you might like to share with 30,000 or so of your colleagues worldwide and as space permits we will include them in issues ahead.
