Nordic Cargo Summit Grooves

Lars-Gunnar Comen     The 10th Nordic Air Cargo Symposium is being held March 29-30, 2017, at Crowne Plaza in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“Actually, the event is not so Nordic as you may imagine,” said Lars-Gunnar Comen, (right) Director of Euroavia International, which puts on the event.
“Normally we have around 180-200 delegates from 20-25 countries, including North America.”

Nice Niche, Wide Range Of Topics

“Our niche in the air cargo conference market is to organize high quality events with no trade show/exhibition attached.
“There are so many of those anyhow.
“At the Nordic Air Cargo Symposium most of our discussion tracks do not have a specific Nordic approach, and that’s why we are able to attract delegates from all over Europe,” Mr. Comen said.

Nordic Trinity

“You might say we have three aims in mind with the Nordic Air Cargo Symposium.
“To invite several shippers since it is so important for the air cargo industry to hear directly from them what they have to say about current issues.
“To make sure that we have all or at least most sectors represented among our speakers.
“It is important to make sure that representatives from the entire supply chain can meet and discuss how to further enhance cooperation.
“Finally, we want to create a great forum for networking for the Scandinavian air cargo community.”

Amazon Drones On

Raimund Paetzmann      “Only a few days ago,” Lars said, “it was confirmed that Mr. Raimund Paetzmann, (left) former Head of EU Operations & Real Estate, Amazon Europe, would be our keynote speaker.
“Mr. Paetzman was in charge of Amazon’s operations and distribution facilities in Europe until a few months ago.
“I hope that a lot of people will find his thoughts on the e-commerce boom highly interesting.”

King Salmon

“The only air freight commodity in Nordics that is growing a lot is Norwegian salmon.
“We have seen an amazing growth in recent years and the numbers will only continue to go up.
“At our event Schenker will review the Norwegian seafood market, current trends, and future outlook etc.
“Several air carriers have entered the Norwegian market with all-cargo capacity in the last two years.”

Focus Scandinavia

“In terms of market report, we note that more and more focus is on Norway recently.
“The Swedish market has always been much more dependent on manufacturing.
“Our largest air freight shippers are Ericsson, Volvo, Astra-Zeneca etc.
“Unfortunately, the Swedish and Danish markets have been pretty stagnant in recent years and there are fears that Ericsson’s decision to move jobs from Sweden to overseas will affect the Swedish air freight volume even more.
“Still, Sweden is a highly interesting market due to our high-tech products and bigger imports.”

The Major Concern

“One issue of concern in Scandinavia is the fact that quite significant volumes originating from these countries are trucked into continental European airports.
“The big forwarders tend to move concentrations of European flows into a few large hubs such as FRA, AMS, and PAR.
“Net result is that trucking impact has made it more difficult to provide direct freighter operations into Scandinavian airports, with the exception of Norway.”

e-Commerce On The Halfshell

“This year,” Lars-Gunnar Comen said, “for the first time, we will have a special focus on e-commerce.
“Nordic Air Cargo Symposium will discuss how the e-commerce boom will affect the traditional air cargo industry.
“Mr. James Roper, Chairman & Founder of IMRG, a specialist e-commerce analyst firm, will join this panel along with a few more interesting names to be confirmed shortly.
“Additionally, a roundtable discussion with the top cargo managers of Finnair and Icelandair and others will discuss how to enhance the quality of the air cargo product.”

Fredrik WildtgrubeFinnair Cargo Steps Up

“Our Conference Chairman is Fredrik Wildtgrube, (left) Head of Sales, Finnair Cargo.
“A truly great guy; everyone will be delighted to meet him,” Lars assures.

Global Britian India Pact

India's Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and UK Aviation Minister, Lord Tariq Mahmood Ahmad handshake the deal.

The UK and India recently concluded a new aviation pact in New Delhi. Among other attributes, the new pact eases restrictions on the number of scheduled flights between the two countries.
In what can be considered a big boost to trade—post-Brexit—the limits on flights from key Indian cities (including Chennai and Kolkata) have been scrapped.
Building new links with important trading partners is a key part of both governments’ plans for a Global Britain, opening up new export markets and creating jobs and economic growth.

India UK Flights Boosted

The agreement also opened all destinations in the UK for Indian carriers for codeshare flights. Reciprocally, the UK carriers can also operate codeshare flights to any international airport in India through domestic codeshare arrangements.
India is a rapidly expanding and important market for aviation.
The agreement will allow airlines to develop new services and air routes.
Said UK Aviation Minister, Lord Tariq Mahmood Ahmad of Wimbledon:
“India is one of our closest allies and key trading partners and this new agreement will only serve to strengthen this crucial relationship.
“We are unlocking new trade and tourism opportunities that will boost our economies, create new jobs, and open up new business links.
“This is great news for both the UK and India and is yet another sign that we are open for business and ready to build new as well as strengthen our existing trade links.”
He also pointed out that with around two and half million passengers flying direct between the UK and India each year, and 88 scheduled services per week in each direction between the two countries, the agreement opens up even more routes and opportunities.

Good News All Around

India’s Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju hailed the agreement as good news for “our businesses and tourists.”
“We already enjoy strong ties with the UK and we welcome such closer associations. In the long run, they will encourage further businesses between our two countries in the civil aviation sector.
“I am sure the Indian private airline companies will benefit from this agreement between our two countries,” he said.

Great ONe-Day Cargo Show At JFK

I remember once upon a time sitting and watching the air cargo come and go from the basement of a small hotel named The Jade East. It was located on a street with the decidedly unromantic name of South Conduit Blvd. at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The Jade East was a “short stay” hotel. People would discreetly park out back and slip in and out of the place 24/7.
My friends Paul and Howard Abrams owned Jade East (and an even smaller place named The Crown over on Rockaway Blvd., across the street from the old Eddie Arcaro’s Steak House, named for a famous jockey who tore up the flats at the nearby Aqueduct Race Track) and took pity on a struggling journalist whose eyes were on the heavens and the cargo area. They rented us some space, and in 1975 our print publication Air Cargo News was born.
We labored all of our years in the print business, and even after spending 23 years in offices inside The Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia, our thoughts were always first and foremost with JFK air cargo. Even though we branched out to other gateways, JFK was our hometown airport.

Rudy Auslander and Geoffrey ArendVoices Not Soon Forgotten

Today our memories swim with the people we knew—from Buz Whalen to Henry Kluck to John Grofik to Isaac Nijankin (who we still talk to) to George Paetow to Jerry Trimboli to Rudy Auslander, pictured here with me (we still hear from Rudy). Those days of Idlewild to JFK burn bright and clear.

Air Cargo Today At JFK

It’s been a long time and maybe too long since we wrote about air cargo activities at JFK. So what better time than now to take a long at the happenings of our old haunt?

Tell Them Willie Boy Needs A Job

Topping the list of fine people we have known in our 42 years on the beat is William “Willie” Mercado, who served Aer Lingus Cargo for more than 35 years.
Willie is one of the nicest, smartest and most experienced people in air cargo. He’s currently looking for a new situation in air cargo.
What makes Willie stand out as an asset is his dedication to the overall good of the industry.
For example, Willie served several terms as President of The JFK-based Air Cargo Association.
Along with a handful of other folks, Willie can be thought of as the heart and soul of organized air cargo in New York.
Willie has given so much to the air cargo community in New York, so we hope someone will smarten up and better their business with this excellent guy.

JFK Cargo Expo March 23

JFK Airport can no longer say it is the big story in global cargo. At this point, it doesn’t even have an airport hotel that can handle a couple of dozen booths and a robust business audience at some meeting sessions for a trade show event. But the JFK Air Cargo Association has a “never say die” attitude. For several years now, it has moved off-airport to a small community venue called Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, where it holds a wonderful one-day cargo event. Thankfully, that event is once again on for March 23, 2017.
Russo’s venue is big, wide, and handsome, allowing for more than 40 booths and some tasty meeting sessions inside a space that otherwise serves mostly as a big wedding and banquet hall.

Among The Best In The World

Make no mistake: despite an abundance of glitzy chandeliers, Russo’s is a heart and soul effort to build business. The JFK Air Cargo Expo is among the best one-day events in the world, thanks to some top notch air cargo people.

JFK Airport Should Be As Good

Certainly, the airport that serves as gateway to the greatest city in the world falls far short of the effort, quality, and excellence of its air cargo community, but New Yorkers—especially the air cargo lot—are a tough, dedicated bunch that soldier on and do their thing despite an indifferent, ineffective airport operator.

Good Times & Goodfellas

Russo’s is smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood that became famous to the world when mobster John Gotti and some of his boys reportedly lightened a Lufthansa Cargo shipment of several millions of dollars (see the movie Goodfellas). Russo’s has space galore, valet parking, and an elevator that allows guest speakers (if they are so motivated) to ramp up their arrival by entering through the center of the dance floor.
The top of our list of places to be in March is the JFK Air Cargo Association’s Air Cargo Expo 2017.

JFK ACA Board

Tip Of The Hat

Hats off to current Air Cargo Association President Joe Badamo and the entire ACA Board, including John Ryan, Jim Burnett, Phil Jensen, Bob Arens, Peter DeBenigno, Susan Zderko, Laura Cascino, and everyone else at this always interesting and varied air cargo organization.

The Details

“Our Expo for 2017,” ACA President Joe Badamo said, “is a one-day morning until late afternoon event that features top industry professionals discussing the dynamics and challenges of regulatory changes and modal impact.”
“We have invited panelists for our single morning session leading up to the luncheon.
“The exhibition portion of the event features displays of products and services and plenty of networking time for direct, face-to-face interaction and networking with airline, freight forwarder, and other air cargo industry key decision-makers in a dedicated and focused environment.
“JFK Air Cargo EXPO Sponsorship opportunities continue to provide organizations with an attractive and cost-effective way of marketing an organization’s goods, services, and brand image to air cargo industry key decision-makers,” Mr. Badamo assures.
“The centerpiece of Air Cargo Day will be a grand luncheon, New York City-style, as the theme—JFK EXPO 2017: Cargo Linking & Forward Thinking—gets a thorough once over,” Mr Badamo said.

ACA Monthly Meetings

ACA monthly meetings are noteworthy and always worthwhile, with interesting speakers and a reasonably priced meal and cocktail hour. There is great networking and lovely, interesting people to converse with.
