Dinner in Zurich
Seated at the President’s table at FIATA’s Extended Board Dinner last Saturday are (from left) FIATA Fellow and FlyingTypers Publisher Geoffrey Arend; FIATA Director General Marco L. Sorgetti, FIATA Senior Vice President Babar Badat; FIATA President Huxiang Zhao; FIATA Treasurer Jean-Claude Delen, FIATA Immediate Past President Francesco S. Parisi; Mrs. Basil Pietersen and FIATA Senior Vice President Basil Pietersen.

Jean-Claude Delen and Joana Nunes Coelho

Brussels Airport all-pro executive Jean-Claude Delen, who also serves the air cargo community as FIATA treasurer and board member, does not wear a green eyeshade or garters on his sleeves, as some traditional moneymen and bank accountants once did.
But JC—as everyone calls the amiable and easy going gentleman—does, like all moneymen, reflect a somewhat serious nature.
It’s right around budget time and we were wondering what, if anything, makes him crack a smile.
Well, picture this: JC and Joana Nunes Coelho, Executive President of Associação dos Transitários de Portugal - APAT (Freight Forwarders Association of Portugal) are shown at the FIATA Headquarters Session in Zurich last week.
IATA and FIATA have struck a landmark deal that many thought was impossible. You’ll pardon the happy smiling faces, but something good is going on here.
“The IATA FIATA Air Cargo Program (IFACP), which both parties have been working to realize for the past four years, now heralds the dawn of a new era; of a true partnership between the major drivers of air cargo in the world,” JC smiles.
IFACP Governance Manager Joana is on point as IFACP gets underway and was equally effusive.
“[We’re] replacing the existing IATA Cargo Agency Program,” Joana said.
“IFACP better reflects the new business models and the buyer-seller relationship that exists today between forwarders and airlines.
“With the establishment of a global IATA-FIATA Governance Board (IFGB), the industry will be better equipped to achieve key goals including: e-cargo priorities of greater efficiency and shared values, clarifying of supply chain liability, improving compliance with safety and security standards through a more coordinated and concerted industry approach.”
      JC Delen adds:
“It’s so exciting for all of us after so many years of frustration, hope, and plain hard work; we can now see and feel the real benefit of something completely different and wonderful about to happen because of our efforts and growing good will all around.”

Rolling On Out

The program rollout has already begun with a preliminary meeting among some forwarders in Canada, FT learned.
“The feedback was about common sense things—liabilities, for instance—and the parties  were well satisfied and quite interested.”

I'm A Dreamer Montreal?

The “IFACP Road Show,” which formally kicks off the test phase in Canada, is still awaiting a couple of approvals and should be underway shortly with appearances by Joana and her team in Montreal and Toronto.
      Watch this space for updates.
Our bet is JC, FIATA, and IATA alike will keep a good thing going.

Too Cool For School

Emirates SkyFresh jumps out in April offering some new and innovative solutions that appear to fit nicely with the advanced infrastructure in Dubai and the carrier’s global force of wide-bodied aircraft.

Vent 16 Tons & What Do You Get?

At the top of the list, the “SkyFresh Ventilated Cool Dolly” offers to fill your airway bill for perishables that require constant circulation of fresh cool air.
Cool Dolly keeps it cool and fresh, Emirates says, with a ventilation system capable of handling 16 tons of perishables that are constantly awash in fresh air  “filtered and circulated inside the Cool Dolly refrigerated interior,” EK said.

All The Cargo That Fits

“Ventilated Cool Dolly,” EK adds, “fits a variety of belly hold/lower deck Unit Loading Devices (ULDs), including pallets, in its interior.”

Levels Too Cool For School

Emirates SkyFresh has three levels: Emirates SkyFresh, Emirates SkyFresh Breathe, and Emirates SkyFresh Active, which offer varied levels of cool chain protection for different kinds of perishables.
Emirates SkyFresh is geared towards temperature-tolerant fruits and vegetables with quick ramp transportation and thermal protection maintained with Emirates SkyCargo’s White Cover blanket.
Emirates SkyFresh Breathe offers protection for temperature-sensitive perishables such as fresh cut flowers, ready to sell cut fruits and vegetables, and fresh fish and includes prioritized ground handling as well as the use of the aforementiond Ventilated Cool Dolly.
Emirates SkyFresh Active brings the highest protection for perishables that cannot withstand any temperature deviation using specialized, temperature-controlled containers during transportation.
And now for a little 16-ton music

Circle In The quare

As we departed the beautiful 600-year-old Haus Zum Rüden dinner palace and walked back to our hotel through the darkened streets of Zurich last Saturday evening, our small band (Francesco Parisi, Robert and Ginger Voltmann, and Stephen “Steve the Aussie” Morris) came upon a quiet cobblestone square with a circular fountain bubbling into the night.
“They often have outdoor events here in nice weather and utilize this fountain and pool as a centerpiece by dispensing wine from the fountain,” Robert said.
We pondered over Europeans fountains and with proper homage to Rome’s Trevi, snapped this picture of Bob and Ginger, very La Dolce Vita.
We think appreciating fountains is one of the milder pleasures of life; looking at this picture makes another point quite nicely.
It doesn’t matter where you are: you are there, and there you are!
So at your next tradeshow, get out and see something local.
The effort can bring into sharper focus all the folks networking and delivering speeches in the hotel.
      Take a walk of discovery.
Later on in our evening adventure, when at 2300 hours our small band dropped into a local, well-stocked wine bar for a nightcap, the owner tossed us and our romantic notions out the door saying, “On Saturdays we close at 11.”
      Ah, Zurich…

Another Opening, Another Show

This week (April 5-8), Robert, who serves as Secretary and Member of the Board of FIATA and Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) President & CEO, is front and center in Las Vegas, Nevada, where TIA is conducting its 39th Annual Conference & Exhibition at The Red Rock Casino & Spa. The conference features a full slate of meetings, a social schedule, and a completely sold out exhibition hall of booths and exhibits.
“Our 3Pl group is engaged and growing its membership organically from trucking and rail into all modes of transport,” Robert said.
And, we can assume, TIA has nothing against taking a moment for a dip in the pool.
