FIATA Hits The Rails
FIATA Hits The Rails
Putting China & Europe on rail is a long held dream of FIATA President and Bejing-based Sinotrans Ltd. CEO Mr. Zhao Huxiang, as he reiterated in an opening address to a working group of global players that met in Shenzhen on May 12-13. The purpose of the meeting was to bring that dream closer to reality by sharing experiences and ideas in order to uncover innovative solutions.
This is the first time FIATA and the International Union of Railways (UIC) ‘rail working group’ have hosted an event together in Shenzhen, but the idea that rail could move vast amounts of freight is considered by many as the key to unlocking vast new markets.
“China-Europe bilateral trade is expected to increase to around 1 trillion USD by 2020, but less than 5 percent of cargo is transported by rail,” Mr. Zhao said.
“We (Sinotrans) are awaiting the day when we can send railroad trains full of cargo from China to Europe.
“Our experience is that the service works quite well; in fact, we started it up two years ago.
“But because of the many borders to cross and various regulations, the service has not been popular.
“For the rail sector, better procedures and transparency can improve efficiency. The sector also needs to lower cost and enhance its competitiveness compared to sea transport.
“This week with FIATA presents the opportunity to work up some ideas and plans with our partners at top level meetings—aimed at eventually establishing a workable rail service between China and Europe.
“You know, 90 percent of my business is focused on international trade.
“As China continues to open up there is much at stake in finding better ways to work with the rest of the world,” the Chairman insisted.
In Shenzhen speakers from ADB, CLECAT, EU Commission, OSJD, UIRR, UNESCAP, and many other organizations and enterprises delivered presentations to the 90 participants from more than 20 countries and regions.
