Out To Sea At CNS

Out To Sea At CNS

We may have been landlocked inside a gargantuan hotel complex in a place called Opryland, but air cargo seemed out to sea. President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air William J. Flynn delivered one of the more curious keynote addresses in recent memory as CNS Partnership Conference began Monday in Nashville, Tennessee.
The esteemed executive was up early, but most of the 600 attendees that partied into the wee small hours at the kickoff party were AWOL as Mr. Flynn spent the better part of a half hour talking about the need for Air Traffic Control reform in the United States.
The speech, while undoubtedly well intentioned, was unusual for a number of reasons, not least of which was the open concern amongst most people in the room for the current state of the global air cargo business.
Expectations of a business update, an idea of what to expect ahead, and a call for greater unity in the face of vast changes in the air cargo landscape were relegated to discussion at a later time, as Mr. Flynn repeatedly called for U.S. Air Traffic Control reform, referring to the current ATC mess at both Washington Reagan National and New York’s La Guardia Airport.
We kept thinking that neither gateway does enough air cargo business to put in your eyeball, and then we remembered that neither airport can even land an airplane much bigger than a B737.
Atlas, it should be mentioned, operates an ACMI fleet of B747s, B777s, and B767s, which cannot land at either airport.
So air cargo’s big April event began with what can only be described as a non-starter, which on the plus side may have at least served as a case in point for the following session topic, titled:
“Importance of Associations In Making Cargo Move.”
